Why Is My Master So Quiet?
If your master feels small beside commercial releases, the answer is rarely “turn it up”. It is usually a combination of comparison level, mix density, low-end control, limiter behaviour, and where the track is being played.
The short answer
There are four usual causes.
A master can sound quiet because it really is under-levelled. It can also sound quiet because you are comparing it against a crushed reference, because your playback app has normalised one track and not the other, or because the mix itself has too much uncontrolled energy in places that do not read as loudness.
The useful question is not “what LUFS should I hit?” The useful question is: what is stopping this record from feeling convincing at the level it can safely carry?
Your reference may be playing louder, from a different source, or through a player with normalisation switched differently.
The record may peak high but still feel light because the body, sustain, mids, or groove are not carrying enough energy.
Low frequencies can eat headroom before the listener hears more punch. That leaves the master technically loud but physically small.
After a point, more limiting makes the transient smaller, the top end sharper, and the whole record less convincing.

Start by comparing fairly.
Most loudness panic starts with a bad comparison. You drop your master into a playlist, hit a commercial reference, and the reference feels wider, brighter, bigger, and more expensive. That may be true. It may also simply be louder for the first listen.
Turn the louder track down until both records feel similar in level, then compare again. If your master suddenly holds up better, the problem is not as simple as “it is too quiet”. If it still feels smaller at matched level, then you have useful information: the issue is tone, density, punch, width, arrangement, or mix control.
Do this before changing anything: level-match your master and reference, listen quietly, and ask what changes when loudness is removed from the argument.
This is also where streaming players can confuse the picture. Spotify, Apple Music and other platforms use playback loudness management in different ways. A track that seems quieter in one place may not be quieter in the file itself.
The meter trap
LUFS describes loudness. It does not finish the record.
LUFS is useful because it gives you a repeatable way to describe perceived loudness over time. It is not useful when it becomes a target that replaces listening. Two masters can read the same integrated LUFS and still feel completely different.
A dense club record, a spacious indie track, and a brittle over-limited demo can all land around similar numbers while behaving very differently in the body. The meter tells you part of the story. It does not tell you whether the kick still moves air, whether the vocal is comfortable, or whether the master feels alive after the first chorus.

More useful energy between the peaks, so it often feels louder without being smashed.
What really makes a record feel loud
Density matters more than brute level.
A track can hit a loud number and still feel weak if the arrangement is hollow, the drums are all spike and no body, the bass is unstable, or the midrange is not carrying the musical energy. The master then has to push peaks that do not translate into useful loudness.
If the record only gets exciting when the limiter is hurting, the problem is usually earlier than the final limiter. It may need mix work, stem control, or a different balance of saturation, clipping, compression, and EQ before the final stage.
Limiter stress
More limiting is not always more loudness.
There is a point where pushing the limiter gives you a higher meter reading but a smaller record. The kick loses its front edge. The vocal starts spitting. The hi-hats come forward. The groove stops breathing. The master may be louder, but the music has less authority.
A good loud master is not just a file that survived being made louder. It is a master where the level, density, tone and movement still agree with each other.
If the kick gets smaller
The limiter is probably shaving the transient faster than the body can support it. Fix the kick, low end, clipping stage, or mix density before forcing more level.
If the vocal gets sharp
The upper mids or sibilance may be too exposed for the amount of gain being added. Tame the source or shape the mix before the final push.
If the track pumps badly
The limiter may be reacting to low-end movement, excessive stereo bass, or one element that jumps out harder than the rest of the record.

What to do next depends on the cause.
If you want the track louder, send the loud reference that made you worry. A good reference is more useful than a target number because it tells the engineer what kind of authority you mean.
