Topping initially established its reputation manufacturing high-end consumer DACs, but the E2x2 represents a formidable, disruptive entry into the professional market. Historically, interfaces at the £150 mark have featured anaemic headphone amplifiers and noisy, compromised preamps. The E2x2 completely shatters that paradigm.

It integrates Topping's proprietary NFCA LE headphone circuitry to easily drive demanding 600-ohm referencing headphones whilst maintaining an exceptionally low 0.9uVrms noise floor. Interface to avoid

Focusrite Scarlett Series

Focusrite Scarlett interfaces are everywhere because they are cheap, simple, and easy to understand, which is useful for a first bedroom setup. The problem is treating them like a serious studio upgrade. They are built to hit a price point, with lightweight construction, very cheap internal parts, ordinary preamps, and a monitor path that does not inspire much confidence once the room and headphones improve. The sound can feel smeared compared with cleaner modern budget boxes, especially when you start listening for transient definition, stereo depth, and low-level detail. For a bedroom producer recording vocals, guitars, ideas, or simple overdubs, a Scarlett will get sound into the computer. For the same money, Topping or MOTU now give cleaner conversion and a more trustworthy monitoring path, so I would not buy a Scarlett as a serious studio tool in 2026.

The Volt series strips away the complex (and frankly, ageing) UAD DSP virtual routing software and instead physically builds analogue circuits directly into the faceplate. The Review

There is a profound reason RME equipment holds its resale value better than almost any other studio gear. Unlike companies that merely buy off-the-shelf USB chips, RME actually writes their audio drivers directly into the hardware FPGA core from the ground up. Their cross-platform stability is legendary.

Sonically, the UCX II employs SteadyClock FS, a proprietary clocking technology that updates at the femtosecond level. It virtually eliminates jitter, resulting in an incredibly deep, wide, and unwavering stereo imaging presentation that makes setting EQ and compression vastly easier.

While 115dB of D/A dynamic range might seem numerically lower than modern prosumer competitors, RME's clocking density means you get the truest, flattest representation of those 115 decibels in the industry.

Furthermore, the TotalMix FX software provides an absurdly powerful zero-latency routing matrix for complex headphone mixes, though you will likely need to consult some of the excellent YouTube tutorials to master its deep learning curve.

This is my ultimate recommendation for 90 percent of serious producers. The converters are clinical and unflinching. Furthermore, RME will actively write driver updates for their gear 15 years after it was released. An investment in RME is an investment for life.

In late 2024, they released the Gen 2 series, bumping the D/A dynamic range of the Twin from 127dB to a very respectable 129dB, and dramatically lowering the THD Noise on the headphone amplifier from 98dB to a far more professional 112dB.

The Unison preamp technology remains the core draw here, altering the physical impedance of the analogue inputs to match classic Neve and SSL preamps in real time before the signal hits the converter.

Engineer’s Verdict

Proceed With Caution. The Twin Gen 2 presents a complex value proposition in 2026. While the conversion is officially excellent, the financial outlay for a desktop two-preamp interface is somewhat disproportionate when competitors like the Audient iD24 offer 126.5dB D/A conversion alongside dedicated hardware outboard inserts at less than half the price.

Furthermore, as modern Apple Silicon processors easily handle massive native plug-in counts, the necessity for UAD's external DSP architecture has significantly diminished. This unit is primarily recommended if your established workflow strictly requires printing UAD plug-ins prior to conversion.

If you do not need 30 inputs, but absolutely demand rack grade, commercial studio conversion on your desk for a pair of high end monitors, the Symphony desktop is nearly peerless.

Important clarification

The Engineering Twins: Neumann MT 48 vs Merging Anubis

Here is a critical clarification for 2026: The Neumann MT 48 and the Merging Technologies Anubis are functionally identical inside the chassis. Sennheiser (Neumann's parent company) acquired Merging Technologies. The MT 48 uses the exact same, world beating Swiss Merging AD/DA boards as the Anubis.

The difference is the target market execution. The Merging Anubis uses a proprietary external 12V supply (or Power Over Ethernet) and complex AES67 RAVENNA networking geared for high end broadcast, classical recording, and Dolby Atmos rooms. Neumann took that exact chassis, threw away the complex network first software, bolted on a standard USB C port, redesigned the touchscreen to be incredibly user friendly, and engineered it for desktop music producers. We will review their core sound as a pair below.

These units use a clever engineering trick. The 136dB headline figure describes tracking into the interface through the microphone input A/D path.

They achieve this using a Dual Output architecture, internally splitting the analogue microphone signal into two parallel converters, one for high gain and one for low, then stitching them back together in the digital domain. It is virtually impossible to clip these preamps under normal vocal or drum recording circumstances.

The physical D/A path, meaning the audio leaving the box for your studio monitors, sits at a more earthly 123dB. That is still excellent, but it is a different number for a different job.

Here lies the absolute king of D/A conversion, and a staple in mastering houses globally for very good reason: its transparency and dynamics are second to none.

Dan Lavry is considered the godfather of digital audio conversion. Moving past the legendary AD122-96, the Savitr is the modern flagship of the Gold line.

THD Noise (Total Harmonic Distortion)

This measures how much signal colouration and background noise the interface introduces. Lower is unequivocally better. When tracking, a high THD smears the transient response of your drum buss.

EIN (Equivalent Input Noise)

Crucial for your preamps. An EIN of -130dBu means the preamp is essentially dead silent. You can take a gain hungry dynamic mic (like an SM7B or RE20), crank it by 60dB, and still hear zero background hiss.

A/D Dynamic Range (Analogue to Digital)

This is your tracking headroom. A higher A/D means you can record a massive, dynamic source (like a live drum kit) without clipping the digital converter.

D/A Dynamic Range (Digital to Analogue)

This determines the depth between the loudest peak and the quietest noise floor on your studio monitors. In mastering, a D/A with 128dB of dynamic range allows you to hear the reverb tails fading to absolute blackness. A cheap D/A with 104dB dynamic range simply cuts those tails off with a wall of white noise.

Clocking and Jitter

Digital audio is a stream of digits processed thousands of times a second. If the internal clock stutters (jitter), the audio points are placed out of microsecond alignment. This smears the stereo image. High end units use proprietary clocking to ensure sub picosecond accuracy, resulting in a rock solid phantom centre.
